FMG Engineers deep dive into Queensland.

Adelaide- based national firm FMG Engineering has expanded its presence in Queensland with the acquisition of structural engineering firm Newport Consulting Engineers

Newport offers a wide range of services to the commercial and residential sectors in the Sunshine State and has developed specialist expertise in residential concrete pool engineering design across southeast Queensland.

As part of the tie-up, all of Newport’s 30 employees have been invited to continue in their current roles, including founder Matthew Yourell, who will remain part of the expanded group.

FMG Engineering now employs 190 engineers and support staff nationally, across offices in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

FMG Managing Director, Matthew Loftes said the firm would look to expand the reach and capability of Newport Consulting Engineers to take advantage of opportunities in the Queensland and other states.

“FMG has significant experience in the commercial sector, and we intend to enhance Newport’s capability to consult on larger scale engineering projects including commercial aquatic projects,” he said.

“In Matthew Yourell, we also have a seasoned professional who we can leverage nationwide as a lead consultant, particularly in aquatics projects, so it’s not just about growing our footprint in Queensland but leveraging the skill and expertise we have inherited from this acquisition to benefit our entire existing and the potential new client base nationally,” he said.

Newport provides structural engineering services to the residential and commercial building markets, including swimming pools, soil testing and site inspections.

It also has extensive experience in custom designed homes and extensions, town-houses and multi-storey units, shopping centres, childcare centres and industrial buildings.

Newport will continue to trade under the same name following the transition.

Mr Loftes said the acquisition had cemented FMG’s position as one of the state’s largest engineering forms in terms of both reach and presence, and diversity of services.

“We are proud to have acquired such a well-respected business in Queensland and we intend to grow our footprint in line with Queensland’s bustling economy and the significant infrastructure development opportunities that exist in that state,” he said.
