New FMG Research facility to keep local developments on solid ground

FMG Reseach has a new home in Kurralta Park after 25 years in Norwood.  The 785 square-metre facility is more than double the size of its former Norwood site and will enhance production efficiency and expand FMG Research’s capacity on account of its increased size and the incorporation of advanced  automated processes.

FMG Research was founded in 1964 nearly ten years before FMG Engineering and is South Australia’s largest independent research facility of its kind, offering soil, aggregate and concrete testing to the building, construction and earth moving industries, as well as quarries and premix concrete suppliers.  Services include compaction tests for roads and subdivisions, construction earthworks advice, soil classification testing and concrete sampling and testing.

FMG Research’s Development Manager Gary Turnbull said the move to a larger facility supports South Australia’s growing infrastructure and development needs.

“The automated processes we have introduced, which include the digital barcoding and scanning of samples, conveying of samples and automatic compaction equipment will reduce manual handling and improve turnaround times,” explained Mr. Turnbull.

“Construction and development in South Australia has increased dramatically over the past few years and our move to the new facility at 48 Barwell Avenue in Kurralta Park will enable us to deliver a speedy and extremely reliable service to the industry as it continues to grow.”

FMG Research currently employs 40 people but this can increase to 60+ people during the delivery of large projects.  FMG Research has serviced a broad range of iconic SA developments such as the new Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide Oval and the Adelaide Convention Centre.

The laboratory is currently supporting several large projects such as the Northern Connector Project, Flinders Link and the Regency to Pym Street Project where materials testing is done daily to ensure the integrity of construction works.

FMG Research’s NATA accredited materials and testing laboratory is also supported by fully equipped mobile field-testing units for metro, rural and remote site works.

“Our new facility will be able to provide greater support to our industry with quicker turnaround times and continue to deliver high quality and reliable testing, ensuring that South Australia’s developments are built on solid ground well into the future,” added Mr. Turnbull.
