National Growth

FMG Engineering joins forces with Newport Consulting Engineers

FMG Engineering has expanded its national footprint with the acquisition of leading Queensland business, Newport Consulting Engineers.   All of Newport’s 30 employees have been invited to continue in their various roles in Brisbane, including Newport’s founder and Principal Consultant, Matthew Yourell who will remain in the expanded business.

The move cements the expanded Newport / FMG business as one of the country’s leading engineering firms in terms of presence, diversity of services and advice.

Newport Consulting Engineers was established in 2006 and offers a wide range of engineering consulting services to the commercial and residential sectors, being particularly well known for its work in residential concrete pool engineering design across Eastern Australia.   It also has extensive experience in custom designed homes and extensions, townhouses and multi-storey units, shopping centres, childcare centres and industrial buildings.

Newport’s reputation in swimming pool design and engineering is a good fit with FMG Engineering which in August 2024 won the Swimming Pool and Spa Association’s (SPASA) gold medal national award for Best Professional Service Business.

The acquisition follows FMG’s expansion in 2021, of its already extensive consulting service in Melbourne, when it established a NATA accredited Materials Testing Laboratory in that state.  FMG Research offers soil, materials and compaction testing services which are integral in providing quality assurance for civil works on a broad range of projects including, carparks, subdivisions, commercial developments and infrastructure projects.

In 2019, FMG continued the expansion of its acclaimed Forensic Engineering arm with the establishment of a Sydney office, which now employs 6 people.  FMG Engineering now employs 190 nationally, across 4 states.

FMG’s Managing Director, Matthew Loftes has advised that FMG’s immediate priority will be to expand the reach and capability of Newport Consulting Engineers to take advantage of opportunities in the Queensland and the broader Australian market.

“FMG has significant experience in the commercial sector, and we intend to enhance Newport’s capability to consult on larger scale engineering projects including commercial aquatic projects,” explained Mr. Loftes.

“In Matthew Yourell, we also have a seasoned professional who we can leverage nationwide as a lead consultant, particularly in aquatics projects, so it’s not just about growing our footprint in Queensland but leveraging the skill and expertise we have inherited from this acquisition to benefit our entire existing and the potential new client base nationally,” added Mr. Loftes.

Newport Consulting Engineers will continue to trade under the same name for the time being and its offering will be strengthened particularly by the expertise of FMG’s Structural and Forensic divisions which are backed by more than 50 years of proven experience.

FMG is proud to have acquired such a well-respected business in Queensland and we intend to grow our national footprint in line with Queensland’s bustling economy and the significant infrastructure development opportunities that exist Australia wide.
