If you have had the opportunity to spend Christmas in Adelaide, there is a fair chance that you have seen the Christmas Tree lighting up Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga every December.
Have you ever wondered what holds it up? FMG Senior Structural Engineer, Mark Riddick knows ,after undertaking an extensive engineering review of the 25m tall Christmas Tree.
Through the creation of a 3D model, on-site condition assessments and careful analysis, Mark developed structural solutions to ensure that the internal structure of the tree would stand up to the elements. And stand up it did – when Adelaide experienced a series of destructive storms and fast winds soon after installation.
“We are glad the tree is fairing so well in the current weather,” said Mark.
Illuminated by 13,616 individually programmable LED lights the Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga Christmas Tree is on display throughout December as part of the City of Adelaide’s Christmas Festival.
