Embracing the opportunity to revitalise the iconic high street and create a space people love to visit The City of Unley engaged FMG Engineering and Outerspace Landscape Architects to realise their vision for King William Road.
An extensive design development process was undertaken before leading an award-winning community consultation process that was key to achieving not only the design aspirations but also their vision for the greater community.
Pioneering design philosophies were paired with the existing heritage elements to deliver the street you see today, which is alive with outdoor activities, increased greenery and patrons. An outcome made possible through bespoke engineering solutions, early contractor involvement and a collaborative process between all parties.
As with all engineering projects, the measure of its success will come over the next 40 years as the innovative pavement designs, stormwater networks and other engineered elements are tested.
Benefits
- The horizontal and vertical design of King William Road and the adjacent streets between Arthur Street and the signalled Park/Mitchell intersection.
- Initial stormwater assessment and advisory on feasible road cross-section changes
- Development of the flexible space elements along the street (moveable bollards to allow for a range of tenants along the street, providing immediate and cost-neutral flexibility between car parking or outdoor dining at each location)
- Research and documentation of pavement design for concrete segmental paver pavement design, pioneering design for the required traffic volumes.
- Detailed 3D design of roads, kerbs, footpaths and all other surface levels, greatly increasing compliance with DDA guidelines, whilst maintaining suitable stormwater peak flow conveyance and dealing with ‘tricky’ flat longitudinal grading.
- Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process with lead Contractor BMD, reviewing value engineering propositions, staging and general tender phase enquiries on the behalf of Council/Design team to ensure key outcomes were retained in the design during the cost optimising process.
- Construction phase assistance including proof rolling, overnight inspection to facilitate staging, quality inspections, rapid response to RFI’s and general project management.
