Soils and Materials Testing
FMG Engineering has its own acclaimed NATA accredited laboratory (Accreditation Number 544), FMG Research, based in South Australia and Victoria.
With industry leading capability and extensive accreditation (in the fields of soil, aggregate and concrete testing) FMG Research has been delivering testing services to the building, construction and earth moving industries, as well as quarries and premix concrete suppliers, for 50 years.
Our mobile or annex laboratory services operate in many of Australia’s remote locations to provide timely and dependable results and clear advice, obtained through detailed understanding of each project.
Testing procedures range from compaction tests for roads and subdivisions, to sophisticated consolidations, triaxial and instability index texts for more complex projects. All works are completed to the AS17025 standard within a certified ISO9001 Quality Management System, our services include:

FMG Research has the ability to undertake the following soil and concrete tests to Australian standards:
- Field density testing
- Standard/modified compaction testing for maximum dry density and optimum moisture content
- California bearing ratio (CBR) – soaked and estimated
- Gradings and atterberg limits
- Emerson dispersion tests
- Soil suctions
- Soil permeabilities
- Logging of soil cores
- Shrink-swell characteristics of reactive clay soils
- Concrete core compressive strength testing
Compaction Supervision
FMG Engineering also has the ability to undertake Level 1 supervision in accordance with AS3798 for the certification of controlled fill sites. We have a 50-strong laboratory team, with many combined years of experience in GITA and GTA supervision. With the ability to establish Annex Laboratories, we are ready to mobilise to any site in South Australia and Victoria. All our field technicians hold up to date licenses for the use of Nuclear Densometer Gauges.
